Each axe we make is hand forged using the traditional blacksmith tools and techniques the Vikings used. Each axe is of similar weight, size, and dimensions to the original Viking era axes. Every axe is created one at a time by hand so each one is uniquely different and bears the marks of the hammer, anvil, and at times the forge welding artifacts from when it was created. Each axe has been finished with a traditional blacksmith finish that shows off their individual beauty and character.
The axe head is hand forged and are forge welded together from separate pieces of steel the same way the Vikings did using the symmetrical or asymmetrical wrapped eye method. The axe body is made from mild steel that is tough and durable and the bit is made from 5160 spring steel to provide a flexible yet durable and sharp cutting edge. After hardening and tempering this combination of steels result in a tough and durable tool that has the ability to absorb shock and to be both hard and flexible at the same time. The handle is hand fitted and is made from American hickory that has been finished with a traditional Swedish pine tar oil that has historically been used all over Scandinavia for millennia to preserve wood. Each axe has been tested and is suitable for cutting wood or for use as a decorative wall hanger, perfect for any man cave, Viking age enthusiast, or medieval re-enactor.
Total Length = 32 3/8 in.
Total Weight = 3.4 lbs
Bit from Toe to Heal = 5 7/8 in.
Bit from Edge to Poll/Butt = 7 3/8 in.
